As you may know, on Tuesday, June 19, 100 people who could not provide proof of legal residency were arrested and detained from the Fresh Mark Company in Salem. This has put many families into a crisis situation. The community of Salem has rallied to provide support to them in this crisis. However, there are still needs and will continue to be needs for the foreseeable future, as the source of income for many of these families has been cut off. In addition, many of those detained are likely to be deported, breaking up many families. Many people have been asking us how they can help, and here are some ways you can help at this time.
1) Pray for the families who have been affected and separated by the raid at Fresh Mark.
2) Donate food and other critical items. Items needed most are: Maseca (corn flour), whole milk, eggs (ideally 18-count), meat, bags of rice, dry beans, fruits, vegetables, cereal, kids’ snack items, bottled water, baby formula, diapers (size 5/6), and toilet paper. This week, we will be accepting food drop-offs at the carport door Monday – Wednesday from 9am-5pm, and Thursday from 9am-noon.
3) Give financially – Many of the families in this community no longer have a source of income. At this time, all monetary donations will be directed toward making sure families continue to have enough food. We will have more information regarding how to give at our Sunday services, or you can give online and select “Guatemalan Community” at http://salemfirstfriends.org/give-online/.
Thank you for being willing to reach out in Christ’s love to our brothers and sisters in the Guatemalan Community.
